Silver Prototypes

First, an experiment with Brass and Titanium

Shortly after acquiring the straight line machines used to apply guilloché, this pen was made as an experiment and the pattern on this pen was ultimately used for the RR1 limited edition. The clip was made from a sheet of 6AL4V titanium and engraved on one of the straight line machines. Heat colored Damascus rings were used for decoration and a Parker nib was fitted to the assembly.

Metalwrite Pre-prototype

Continuing the experiments with engraving and the use of different materials led to this pen; one of sterling silver and Damascus. The pattern on the barrels remains the same as what would ultimately be used for RR1 and the Damascus used was a piece from Admiral Steel which is a well known steel provider for the custom knife industry. In this case the steel, a conventional Damascus twist pattern, was etched in ferric chloride to bring out the contrast in the different metals used in the forging. Since no heat was applied or bluing chemicals there is no real color except for the shades of gray. The clip was made from 2mm thick sterling sheet and again a Parker nib was fitted to complete the instrument.
